When we think about work health and safety, office environments may not immediately come to mind. However, prolonged sitting, poor workstation habits, repetitive movements and everyday workplace incidents can all impact employee health and safety.
Creating a safer workplace isn’t just about responding when something goes wrong. It also means encouraging simple, preventative habits that support employees throughout the working day.
One easy place to start? Movement. These four desk-friendly stretches take just a few minutes and require no equipment or extra space.
1. Seated Spinal Twist
Long periods of sitting can contribute to stiffness through your back and torso.
Try it: Sit tall and gently twist to each side, holding for 20–30 seconds.
2. Neck & Upper-Trap Stretch
Computer and desk work can contribute to tension around the neck and shoulders.
Try it: Gently tilt your ear towards your shoulder. Hold for 20–30 seconds before repeating on the other side.
3. Chest & Shoulder Stretch
Spending hours sitting at a desk can encourage a rounded posture and tightness through the chest and shoulders.
Try it: Clasp your hands behind your back and gently open your chest. Hold for around 30 seconds.
4. Seated Hamstring Stretch
Breaking up periods of sitting with simple movement can help keep your body moving throughout the workday.
Try it: Extend one leg in front of you and gently lean forward. Hold, then switch sides.
Workplace Safety Goes Beyond Your Desk
Stretching and regular movement are small ways employees can support their health during the workday, but office work health and safety also means being prepared when an incident occurs.
Slips, trips, falls, cuts, burns, allergic reactions and sudden medical emergencies can happen in almost any workplace. Having team members who know how to recognise an emergency and provide appropriate first aid can make a valuable difference while professional medical assistance is on the way.
That’s where first aid training becomes an important part of workplace preparedness.
PADI RTO offers nationally recognised First Aid and CPR training designed to give participants practical skills and confidence to respond to common emergencies.
Whether you’re refreshing your workplace safety procedures or organising training for your team, first aid training is a practical step towards creating a safer and better-prepared workplace.

Remember: Stretches should feel gentle and comfortable. Stop if you experience pain or unusual discomfort.
