As spring arrives in Australia, the days get warmer, flowers bloom, and outdoor activities pick up again. But with the beauty of spring also comes seasonal risks—especially allergies, asthma flare-ups, and insect stings. Being prepared with the right First Aid knowledge can make all the difference when an unexpected emergency occurs.

At PADI RTO, we’re committed to giving you the skills and confidence to act in real-life situations. Whether you’re at home, at work, or enjoying the great outdoors this spring, here’s what to watch out for—and how First Aid training can help.

Common Springtime Risks

1. Seasonal Allergies & Hay Fever

Watery eyes, sneezing, and congestion are common in spring when pollen levels rise. While usually mild, allergic reactions can sometimes worsen into more serious conditions.

Prevention tip: Track pollen counts, keep windows closed on high pollen days, and shower after being outdoors to remove allergens.

PADI RTO Recommendation: Our HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid course teaches you how to recognise and manage mild to severe allergic reactions, including the use of antihistamines and EpiPens.

2. Asthma Flare-Ups

Spring can be one of the worst seasons for asthma sufferers, as pollen, dust, and weather changes can trigger attacks.

Prevention tip: Always carry your prescribed inhaler, avoid outdoor activity when pollen counts are high, and have an updated asthma action plan.

PADI RTO Recommendation: In HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid, you’ll learn how to assist someone experiencing breathing difficulties and how to respond if their condition escalates into an emergency.

3. Insect Stings & Bites

Bees, wasps, and other insects are more active in spring, increasing the chances of stings and potential allergic reactions.

Prevention tip: Avoid wearing strong perfumes, keep food covered outdoors, and wear shoes when walking on grass.

PADI RTO Recommendation: Our HLTAID011 Provide first aid course covers how to identify anaphylaxis, use an adrenaline auto-injector, and provide life-saving care until medical help arrives.
