As children head back to school, safety becomes part of the everyday routine again. From playground tumbles to swimming lessons and family beach days, knowing how to respond calmly and correctly can make a meaningful difference.

At PADI, safety is never an afterthought. Whether underwater or on land, the same principles apply. Stay calm, communicate clearly and know when to seek trained help. That is where BUBBLE comes in.

BUBBLE is a simple, age-appropriate framework that helps children remember what to do in unexpected situations while reassuring parents that safety remains in trained hands.

🫧 What is BUBBLE

BUBBLE is a safety mindset built around calm thinking, communication and preparation. It draws inspiration from diving practices where clear procedures and controlled breathing are essential.

B is for Breathe

In moments of stress, panic can make situations worse. Teaching children to pause and breathe helps them stay calm and think clearly.
Just like divers control their breathing underwater, calm breathing on land supports better decision making and safer outcomes.

U is for Update an adult

Children should always know to tell a teacher, parent or supervisor straight away if something feels wrong or someone is hurt.
Early communication allows trained adults to step in quickly and appropriately.

B is for Buddy up

Staying with others is a key safety habit at school and around water.
In diving, the buddy system is essential. On land, it ensures children are not left alone when help is needed.

B is for Be prepared

Preparation does not mean treating injuries or accessing first aid kits.
It means knowing who to tell, where to go, and how to stay calm until trained help arrives.

Children play an important role in safety by raising the alarm early and following instructions, not by attempting first aid themselves. Ensuring, your first aid and CPR training is up to date means you can help a child in need, and with confidence.

L is for Look for trained help

First aid and CPR are skills that require training and regular refreshers.
Children are encouraged to seek out adults who are trained rather than trying to manage situations on their own.

This mirrors diving environments where clearly defined roles help keep everyone safe.

E is for Explain clearly

Being able to explain what happened, where they are, and how someone feels helps adults respond faster and more effectively.
Clear information is one of the most valuable safety tools a child can have.

Safety skills that grow with your child

Back to school is the perfect time to revisit safety conversations.  BUBBLE is not about creating fear. It is about building confidence, awareness and trust in safe systems.
These skills support children at school, in sport, at home and in the water.

At PADI, we believe safety education should be ongoing. As a Registered Training Organisation, we champion regular first aid and CPR refreshers, so families, educators and communities stay ready when it matters most.
